Lord Mayor Ray MacAdam continues annual ‘Casting of the Spear’ tradition at Dublin Port

23 May 2026

Dublin Port Company hosted the annual ‘Casting of the Spear’ ceremony today at Poolbeg Yacht & Boat Club, when the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam, carried out the historic maritime tradition.

The ‘Casting of the Spear’ is one of the most symbolic occasions on the Dublin Port calendar. Dating back to 1488, the ceremony commemorates the actions of then Lord Mayor Thomas Mayler, who rode to the edge of Dublin Bay on horseback and cast a spear into the sea to mark the city’s eastern boundary.

Each year, the tradition is re-enacted by the sitting Lord Mayor, who becomes Honorary Admiral of Dublin Port.

Commenting on the tradition, Lord Mayor Councillor Ray McAdam said: “Dublin Port has a long and storied history at the heart of Dublin City. I’m honoured to be taking part in this year’s Casting of the Spear, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 15th century. The Port plays a vital role not only in Dublin’s economy, but in Ireland’s as a whole, while also supporting the vibrant water sports clubs along the River Liffey.”
