Access Dublin Port via Promenade Road until Autumn 2026
Alexandra Road is a critical component of Dublin Port’s internal road network, providing access to various LoLo (Lift-on/Lift-off) and RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) terminals within the Port estate. Over time, the condition of both the road surface and the integrated rail line has significantly deteriorated, posing health and safety risks and necessitating ongoing maintenance.
Upgrading Alexandra Road is essential to enhance safety, improve operational efficiency, and support the long-term sustainability of the Port’s transport infrastructure. As part of the planned works, a new segregated pedestrian and cycle track will be installed, greatly improving Active Travel connectivity for people entering the Port from East Wall Road.
The project also includes the installation of major utility services. This will involve laying new EirGrid ducting to support the “Powering Up Dublin” initiative, as well as new electrical ducting to facilitate Dublin Port’s transition to shore-to-ship power capabilities.
In addition, the upgrade will support enhancements to the Port’s rail infrastructure, including new rail turnouts. These improvements align with Dublin Port’s commitment to maintaining rail connectivity and providing dedicated rail sidings. This future-proofs services such as the Boliden Tara Mines route and ensures that the Port remains rail-enabled—an essential requirement for any Tier 1 port.
Notice of Road Closure – 19th July 2025
To facilitate these critical road and rail maintenance works, please be advised that Alexandra Road will be closed to all Port-related traffic—including vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists—between East Wall Road and No. 1 Branch Road South, effective from 19 July 2025.
This closure will remain in place until Autumn 2026.
During this period, all access to and from Dublin Port will be via Promenade Road, see map below.
