Current Vacancies


Tug Master 

This role is a flexible multi skilled marine role as a tug master. He/she will be working as part of a self-relieving, interdependent team of tug masters, acting as a key team member within a team of Pilots, Marine Operatives, VTS and Shipping Desk to provide a safe and efficient tug service for DPC. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the tug is ready for immediate notice with respect to the appropriate Notices to Mariners.
  • Be knowledgeable with the operation of the Voith Schneider tug during towing operations working closely with ships masters and pilots to provide support for safe shipping manoeuvres.
  • Be capable of communicating freely with ships masters, pilots, VTS and other jurisdiction users to ensure a shared mental model during towage operations.
  • Having a full working knowledge of direct and indirect towing techniques and all the associated hazards.
  • Ensure that the daily, weekly and monthly tug check lists are carried out and recorded appropriately.
  • Fire fighting and man overboard and “life boat” drills are carried out and recorded.
  • Be knowledgeable with regard to a hull breach/bilging/ flooding and prevention of the loss of the vessel  
  • Be familiar with starting/ stopping the engines and ancillary machinery.
  • The pipeline systems and tank plan and how fuel, oils, ballasting and freshwater systems operate.
  • Be capable of operating a 2 man system in the river inside the breakwaters.
  • Be aware of the principles for tackling an engine room and a storage space fire on board. 
  • Be aware of girting and how it may occur on a tug during a towage operation 
  • Refuelling of the tug in line with strict SOP compliance. 
  • The tug maintained in a safe and tidy manner with all items secured and all equipment in full working order. 
  • Where engineering items require attention there are reporting lines to request maintenance 
  • Ability to operate workboats and multicat ‘Rosbeg’ and assist with marine works within the Port. 
  • Keep up to date knowledge and sign-off with the QPULSE safety database and assist with safety amendments.
  • Undertake such training as required and directed by the Harbour Master to ensure competence is achieved and maintained in accordance with standards for towage.
  • Exercise good judgement in the escalation of issues to the Marine Supervisor or on-call Harbour Master (HM).

Qualifications, Experience and Required Skills 

Must Have:

  • Officer of the Watch Deck (OOW) and or Equivalent Certificate of Competency (CEC) suitable for working within the Irish Mercantile Marine
  • Applicants must ensure that the relevant STCW courses have a minimum of one year validity at the time of applying
  • Knowledge and experience as Tug Master
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills – Excellent written and oral communication skills – Harbour Operations is a maritime safety critical area with English as our working language. Your proficiency must be at IELTS level 5 or equivalent
  • A full class B clean driving licence
  • PC skills
  • Possess relevant and in date STCW qualifications

Advantageous:

  • Team Management and Leadership Experience

  • The ability to become fully familiar with the DPC tugs, their systems and operation so as to be able to fulfil the role of Tug Master.
  • The ability to identify hazards, manage risk both in planning phases and dynamically as required in the marine environment.
