25 Years of Backing Local Potential
7 October 2026
Dublin Port celebrates 25 years of its Scholarship Programme, shining a light on the success of its recipients in the hardworking heart of Dublin.
Since 2001, the Dublin Port Scholarship Programme has been backing local potential by supporting students from Dublin 1, 2, 3 and 4 to help them take the next step in their education. Over the past 25 years, the initiative has awarded more than €1.5 million to approximately 1,500 students from communities close to the Port.
Scholarship recipients have gone on to build careers across a wide range of fields, including as paramedics, teachers, airline captains, data analysts and music educators. Many continue to live and work in the local area, making a real difference to their communities.
For many recipients, the Scholarship has been about more than financial support. It has helped remove some of the barriers that can make the move into third-level education difficult, giving students greater confidence to pursue opportunities they may not otherwise have considered.
As the programme reaches its 25th anniversary, Dublin Port is celebrating not only the milestone itself, but also the people behind it: the students who have pursued their ambitions, built careers and contributed to their communities. Their stories reflect the impact that investing in local people can have, and the importance of ensuring that talent and ambition have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of background.
By helping to ease some of the financial pressures associated with third-level education, the programme has supported scholars in accessing and completing degrees across STEM, healthcare, education and the arts at institutions including Trinity College Dublin, UCD, TU Dublin and Maynooth University.
Edel Currie, Community Engagement Manager at Dublin Port, said:
“Dublin Port has been honoured to support students in our local community on their educational journeys. Our goal is to make third-level education more accessible for young people and give them the opportunity to fulfil their ambitions.
“We are so proud of our recipients, who have gone on to do amazing things in their fields and have inspired the next generation. We are also delighted to see how many recipients give back to their communities by supporting others.”
