Monday, 31st August, 2009: Dublin Port Company has today signed a new agreement with leading shipping company, Cobelfret Ferries which together with Belgian C2C Shipping Lines will increase the number of Ro-Ro units handled through Dublin Port by 10% annually. These new Ro-Ro services, which will link Dublin Port directly with mainland Europe, confirms Dublin Port’s position as Ireland’s port of choice for importers and exporters.
The new services will lead to up to four new sailings between Dublin Port and the ports of Rotterdam (Nl) and Zeebrugge (B). The vessels used are new and larger ships with capacity to carry up to 366 freight units which equates to 3 kilometres of truck lengths. The size of these vessels reflects the International trend towards larger ships. The new agreement also demonstrates the further development of the “Motorways of the Sea”, an EU-wide initiative promoting a modal shift of goods from road to sea.
Welcoming the announcement, Mr. Enda Connellan, Chief Executive, Dublin Port Company said: “This new service demonstrates the international trade’s commitment to Dublin Port and is a vote of confidence in Ireland’s premier port. Dublin Port is the port of choice for accessing Ireland’s largest market and remains the cleanest, greenest and most efficient way of getting goods to and from the greater Dublin area.”
