Use of Pyrotechnics within the Port
The use of pyrotechnics within the confines of Dublin Port is strictly prohibited, except with the prior approval of the Harbour Master and in the case of an emergency.
Even in an emergency, consideration needs be given to the possible catastrophic consequences resultant to the dangers involved when using pyrotechnics within the confines of the port, especially when in close proximity to oil berths, discharging tankers, fuel storage tank farms and container terminals or other ships containing a wide variety of flammable and potentially explosive products. Additionally there is also the danger of pyrotechnics / flares landing within adjoining residential areas.
It should also be noted that contained within the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), Chapter V which deals with Safety of Navigation, Regulation 35 states:-
“The use of an international distress signal, except for the purpose of indicating that a person or persons are in distress, and the use of any signal which may be confused with an international distress signal, are prohibited.”
